For event planners and venues
What does event security actually do?
Short answer
Event security controls who comes in, keeps crowds moving, watches the parking area, handles intoxicated or disruptive guests quietly, protects restricted areas, and coordinates with police and medics in an emergency. Good event officers work from a written plan with a lead officer who is your single contact during the event.
Before the event
- Walk the venue and note entrances, exits and blind spots
- Write a plan: positions, radio channel, emergency exits, who calls 911
- Agree with you on guest-list, bag and re-entry rules
During
- Entry checks and wristbands
- A roving officer in the lot
- Early, low-key intervention when someone is becoming a problem
- Protection of stage, backstage, VIP, cash and gift areas
After
- Clear the venue and lot
- Stay until staff have left
- Send a written report the next day
