For event planners and venues
Do I need security for an event with alcohol in San Diego?
Short answer
Often, yes. Many San Diego venues require licensed security whenever alcohol is served, event insurance policies frequently require it, and a city special event permit or a one-day alcohol license can include security conditions. Check your venue contract, your insurer and your permit first. Each may set a minimum number of officers.
Who can require it
- The venue. Usually written into the rental agreement, sometimes with a ratio of officers to guests.
- Your insurer. Event liability policies often require licensed, insured security when alcohol is served.
- The permit. Events on public property or streets need a special event permit, and the security plan is part of the review.
- The alcohol license. A one-day license from California Alcoholic Beverage Control can carry conditions.
What security does at an event with alcohol
- Checks identification or wristbands at entry if you want it
- Works with bartenders on cut-off signals
- Gets an impaired guest a ride before there is a scene
- Keeps alcohol inside the licensed area
We send our license and insurance certificate to your venue or insurer, usually the same day. See event security.
